Atomic pebbles
I have been reflecting on the molecular pebbles and thinking towards making atomic pebbles guided by actual/estimated atomic size and the number of electrons and which orbitals they might be in, ultimately aiming for a full periodic table. In the course of my Internet wanderings/wonderings I have found some great resources: Web elements have a nice spherical representation of atomic size on a graph (click on scatter plot under the periodic table) and Crystal Maker have a fine periodic table even! The chemistry consortium have a brilliant guide to 'electron habitat' (click on an individual element for its details) - have a look at Astatine as an example.

Great! And great links, thanks! I've been playing with emission spectra of atoms - planning on making molecules (trying to get the head round exactly what is supposed to be going on with those pesky electrons)- feeling a "lovingly handcrafted atomic representations"show/symposium/tea party coming on, what do you think? :)
show/symposium/tea party sounds magnificent! My current plans are for a small installation in the white board in the lab - as the atoms will be magnetic - but it will be some time before I have made them! I am itching to though :-) How is your show going?
magnetic! brilliant! You are a genius! Then you can surely get them to move around using electrical fields & stuff -or at least wobble ?. I too can expect a long gestation period though would love to get really stuck into it right now... just love the idea of doing lumpy touchy-feely stuff with all that intangibility :)Show is going great, thanks,such a good response I'm going to try getting it into some other places...
